Hi fellas, today we're driving the BMW M4 and trying to hit the top speed! The car is quite fast, and was pulling hard when we had to brake.
Interestingly enough, the 155mph limiter didn't seem to work...

Was this in the US? I didn't think they had the 155 limit on M model US cars.

Ah that explains it. Thanks!

BMW has "uncorrected" speedo numbers that read higher than actual speed and the variance gets worse toward the top end of the dial. A 155 "true speed" limiter won't kick in until the speedo needle points well above 160. This is true for the US spec cars at least. Source: I own one.

American BMW are limited to 155mph also. But this speed limit is not governed by the speedometer, but by the GPS. Which is why it often reads something like 165 or even 170mph on the speedo. In reality it's 155mph exactly.

Really? I don't know how their system works, but the butt speedo was indicating ever increasing velocity haha

On that particular run, you stop accelerating at 160mph on the speedo... Most BMWs at their topspeed show 165/167mph but it is 155mph in reality.

I did the same test on the Autobahn a couple weeks ago. Definitely limited at 166mph for me. This keeps in time with the assessment that the limiter is GPS based.

I had an E46 M and never found any consensus on this. Some say that the speedo is innacurate, or that the limiter only kicks in in 6th gear. People have had there stock e46 m3 to 8000 rpm in 5th ... I can understand the speedo lying... but the tach and gear ratios lying?? 5th gear 8000rpm = 171 mph based on math. In a new M4 5900 rpm in 6th regardless of oem tire = 160mph.
